Government

The Dorris City Council is the legislative body of the City government and is composed of five Council Members elected for overlapping four-year terms.  The Council shall have the power, in the name of the City, to do and perform all acts and things appropriate to a municipal corporation for the general welfare of its inhabitants, which are not specifically prohibited by the Constitution and laws of the State of California. The Council acts as a body.  Policy is established by majority vote. Action by the City Council shall be taken by means of ordinance, resolution, or oral motion duly made and passed by the majority (unless otherwise provided in State law).

The Council Members choose one of their Members to serve as Mayor for a two-year term.  The Mayor shall preside at all meetings of the Council and perform such other duties consistent with the office as may be required by the Council or by vote of the people.  The Mayor does not possess any power of veto. The Mayor may make or second any motion, and present and discuss any matter, as a member of the Council. Regular meetings of the City Council are held the first and third Monday’s of the month starting a 6:00 p.m. at Dorris City Hall, 307 S. Main Street, Dorris, California. (Unless otherwise noted such as holidays)

It is the policy of the City Council that members of the public shall have the opportunity to speak to any meeting agenda item before final action.

Committee meetings, workshops, trainings and informal conferences may be required so that Council Members are completely informed on the many issues which come before them regarding matters of concern to municipal government and within their domain of authority
